What Georgia Cities Have the Most Car Accidents?

Car accidents are a common sight throughout Georgia every year. Only the smallest and most isolated of communities could potentially claim to lack any type of motor vehicle accident happening within their borders.
However, just as one Georgia city differs from another, there can be vast differences in the number of crashes that various cities see. It should come as no surprise that the towns and communities with large populations will see elevated numbers of car wrecks compared to their smaller counterparts.
That does not necessarily mean that you are guaranteed to be hurt in a big city traffic accident, but driving in a larger city does come with an increased risk of being involved in some type of collision.
5 Georgia Cities With the Most Traffic Accidents
In 2024, a total of 367,523 traffic accidents were reported in Georgia, injuring over 143,000 people. That total also includes 1,494 fatal wrecks, responsible for the deaths of 1,596 people.
In particular, the following five cities in Georgia saw the majority of the state’s total accidents:
1. Atlanta
Nearly ten percent of the state’s traffic crashes occurred in Atlanta, the state’s largest city. Authorities recorded 33,305 traffic crashes in 2024, equating to an average of approximately 91 crashes per day. Fifty-nine people were killed and 13,466 others were injured.
2. Augusta
Authorities in Augusta recorded 8,643 motor vehicle accidents in 2024, including 42 fatal wrecks. On average, Augusta witnessed a motor vehicle crash about once every hour in 2024, leading to over 2,800 people being injured, and saw over three fatal wrecks every month as well.
3. Savannah
Savannah’s population may not be quite as large as some of the other cities on this list, but the town experienced more traffic accidents in 2024 than the latter two communities on this list. A total of 7,455 collisions took place in the city in 2024, injuring approximately 2,200, and 14 of these collisions were fatal.
4. Columbus
Georgia’s third-largest city by population witnessed 6,170 car and truck wrecks in 2024, or over 500 per month. Twenty-seven fatal crashes killed 28 people that year, and 1,912 other people sustained some type of injury.
5. Macon
Macon, Georgia, was the site of 6,097 motor vehicle accidents in 2024, a number only slightly less than Columbus. Nevertheless, far more people were injured in crashes here — a total of 2,897. The city also experienced more traffic fatalities, with 36 people killed in 35 fatal accidents.
Santa Claus Has One of the Lowest Traffic Accident Totals
Compared to these larger cities, Santa Claus, Georgia, has one of the safest traffic records of any community in the state. In 2024, only a single traffic accident was reported, and no one was killed or even injured as a result of that lone collision.

No matter what size city you are driving in, staying safe on the road depends in large part on avoiding common driving errors. The following mistakes can increase the chance of an unintentional crash that can leave you or your loved ones injured:
- Speeding
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Being distracted by a cell phone, any other item, or a passenger
- Ignoring right-of-way laws
- Failing to check your blind spots for other traffic before changing lanes
