Teen Car Accidents in Georgia: Unraveling the Statistics and Trends

Teen drivers tend to be an at-risk group on the road, with youthful inexperience and impulsivity that can contribute to accidents. As a result, state and national groups have endeavored to alert teens and parents to these risks and encourage this age group to practice safe driving.

Unfortunately, thousands of teenage and young drivers have died in traffic crashes in Georgia over the past several years. Hundreds of thousands more have been injured. These numbers remind young motorists, their parents, and government officials alike that more work needs to be done to further protect some of the most vulnerable drivers on the road.

Georgia Fatality and Injury Statistics for Teens

Between 2019 and 2023, there were 629,253 accidents involving a driver between the ages of 15 and 24. Over 2,000 of these accidents were classified as fatality wrecks and resulted in a total of 2,266 deaths. Overall, more than 200,000 injuries happened in crashes involving a driver in the 15 to 24 age bracket.

The number of fatality crashes peaked in 2021 before decreasing slightly in 2022 and 2023. In 2021, 509 crashes killed at least one person and involved a young driver. That number decreased to 436 in 2022 and 408 in 2023. All three years were still above 2019’s total of 315 fatal crashes.

When considering all types of car accidents involving a teenage or young adult driver, 2021 had the highest total at 134,686. The year with the next-highest total was 2019, during which there were 131,307 accidents. Only 112,865 crashes involving a young driver happened in 2020.

Based on these numbers, it is clear that the number of fatalities from wrecks involving a teen or young driver is on a slow decline. However, the most current numbers are still elevated from 2019. Conversely, the number of crashes involving a driver aged 15 to 24 has remained more or less constant over the five years between 2019 and 2023.

Top Causes of Teen Car Crashes

Whenever a teen or young driver gets behind the wheel of a car, they can face an elevated risk of being involved in a car accident.

Some of the factors that lead to this increased risk include:

Driver Inexperience

A teenage driver has not spent as much time behind the wheel as older drivers. As a result, when something happens that requires immediate action, teens may not know how to react appropriately. Their actions can unintentionally make a crash more likely to occur.

Distracted Driving

Teens can be distracted by more than their cell phones. Other passengers in the car can take teen drivers’ attention with conversation, horseplay, or other actions. Teens may not have the confidence to tell their passengers to sit still or quiet down, which can allow dangerous distractions inside the car to continue.

Speeding

The thrill of speeding is tempting for teens as well as adults. However, teens may be less prepared to react to dangers that suddenly appear before them when they are speeding or traveling on highways at elevated speeds. Excessive speed, especially when combined with inexperience, can create a dangerous situation for teenage drivers.

Keeping Teen Drivers Safe in Georgia

Driving continues to be a risky activity for teen drivers across Georgia. Although the number of crashes, including fatality accidents, involving young drivers has slowly decreased in the past three years, these numbers are still high compared to historical data.

Continuing to encourage teens to practice safe driving and allow them opportunities to gain more experience on the road with older, more seasoned drivers is essential to reducing young drivers’ risk of harm in Georgia and beyond.
