Every state, including Georgia, has a few laws that seem a little out of place in modern times. Some of these rules date back decades and aren’t actively enforced today, but they still technically remain part of the legal code nonetheless. While they are probably more likely to make you laugh more than anything else, at least at first glance, they offer a fun look at just how unpredictable the law can be.

Beyond the entertainment value, however, what you might not expect is that some of Georgia’s stranger laws actually do touch on topics that relate to personal injury law and everyday safety. Read on for five of the most unusual laws worth knowing about in the Peach State.

1. Fortune Telling is Restricted

Some Georgia municipalities regulate fortune-telling businesses through local licensing and business ordinances. For example, cities like Marietta have historically required fortune tellers, palm readers, and clairvoyants to obtain business licenses before operating legally.

While regulating psychics and palm readers may sound unusual today, these rules were originally intended to protect consumers from fraud and deceptive business practices.

2. It Is Illegal To Spit From a Car or Bus

Marietta, Georgia, has a local ordinance that prohibits spitting in public places, including from cars or buses. Oddly enough, the rule reportedly does not apply to truck drivers. Although the ordinance may sound outdated, laws like these were originally intended to protect public health and keep roadways and sidewalks cleaner and safer for others.

3. Some Georgia Cities Restrict Roaming Livestock and Poultry

Many Georgia municipalities regulate livestock and poultry from roaming freely through neighborhoods and public roads. For example, Paulding County prohibits backyard chickens from “roaming at large or free-ranging” under local regulations.

These rules may sound humorous at first, but they exist for important safety reasons. Loose animals can create traffic hazards, damage property, and increase the risk of accidents involving drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

4. You Can’t Wear a Hood in Public in Dublin

In Dublin, Georgia, a city ordinance makes it illegal for anyone over 16 to show up in public wearing a hood, mask, or anything else that hides their identity. The rule has been on the books for decades and was originally meant to discourage people from concealing their faces in public spaces. 

Georgia state law (O.C.G.A. § 16-11-38) actually supports this with a statewide version of the rule as well, though exceptions do exist for things like holiday costumes and safety equipment.

5. You Must Eat Fried Chicken With Your Hands in Gainesville

Gainesville, Georgia, calls itself the Poultry Capital of the World, and the city takes that title seriously. Back in 1961, local lawmakers passed an ordinance making it illegal to eat fried chicken with anything other than your bare hands. No forks, no knives, no exceptions. 

The law was originally part of a publicity stunt to promote the city’s poultry industry, but it’s technically still enforceable.
